With its long awaited September 21 play date just around the corner, the excitement surrounding the nationwide release of Quark Henares’ “Rakenrol” is reaching an all time high. Even before the movie landed its final release date, the fan buzz for the film had been amazing. Already having garnered acclaim overseas, Rakenrol blew the jam packed audience away with its humor, wit, and heart, during its highly anticipated premiere night as the closing film during the 2011 Cinemalaya Film Festival.
Early in the movie, you can’t help but root for Jason Abalos’ and Glaiza De Castro’s “Odie” and “Irene”. The chemistry of the two rising young actors is undeniable, as they play the roles of two best friends that were brought together by their mutual love for rock music. As Irene and Odie decide to pursue their dream of forming their own rock band, they get themselves into hilarious situations while trying to find the right members for their group, and carve a name for themselves in the Philippine music scene. Fate brings them together with experienced guitarist Mo (Ketchup Eusebio), and school bully turned drummer, JunFour (Alwyn Uytingco). In a surprising turn of events, former child star Matet De Leon (playing herself) discovers their band and offers to be their manager. And just like that, the “Hapipaks” were born.
Perhaps stealing the movie, however, is Diether Ocampo, who plays sexy Rock Star “Jacci Rocha”. Ocampo was hilariously effective as the narcissistic lead singer of the band “Baron Munchaussen”, leaving Irene helpless to the charms of her confessed “All Time Super Crush”, much to the dismay of Odie. Though it surprises no one that he has the sex appeal needed to convincingly play the hunky front man of a popular rock band, it was his comedic timing and the way he embraced the role that made Jacci Rocha perhaps the most iconic character of Diether Ocampo’s illustrious career. As the “Hapipaks” continues to steadily gain popularity, Rocha’s sets his sights on Irene, driving a wedge in her relationship with Odie.
Comedian Ramon Bautista portrayal of flamboyant Music Television Director “Flame Tigerblüden” and Jun Sabayton’s artist “Yagit” character also ranks highly among the comedy highlights of the film, as both had the aisles rolling in laughter during the premiere night. The movie also features a series of surprise special appearances by Pinoy rock’s biggest names and original music by the “Hapipaks”.
Rakenrol is a five year long labor of love project by Director Quark Henares and screen writer Diego Castillo (of the band Sandwich), that finally hits the big screen on September 21, 2011 in theaters nationwide.
Rakenrol is Presented by Regal Entertainment and produced by Reality Entertainment & Furball, in cooperation with PostManila, with media partners Win Radio 107.5, Big Radio 91.5 and Jam 88.3.
